Safari 3 - Eco - Oudtshoorn - Scenic, Cultural & Nature Barely 80 kilometres from South Africa's famous Garden Route lies a spectacular semi-desert area known as the Little Karoo. Take a journey with us over the Outeniqua Mountains and see how the unique landscape changes from lush green vegetation into semi-desert shrubbery, stone and sand. To many the Little Karoo is a spiritual place where rocks are believed to be 800 million years old and indigenous tribes, known as the San and Khoi, left evidence of their existence in rock art and beautiful place names such as Attakwaskloof, Kamanassie, Outeniqua and Gamka. You will discover Oudtshoorn, a town famous for its thriving ostrich feather industry - and the interesting Victorian and Art Nouveau architecture of the homes of former 'ostrich barons' who made their fortunes when feathers first became fashion in the 1920s. It is also the home of the Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (directly translated as Little Karoo National Arts Festival) - one of the country's largest arts and culture festivals, focusing specifically on the Afrikaans language. Our first stop is a 45-minute tour of an ostrich farm where you can ride an ostrich, and find out how an ostrich can give you a 'neck massage' and 'goodbye kiss.' We visit the Cango Caves, Africa's largest show cave system - a 20-million year old cave system that consists of a series of hidden chambers cut deep into thick limestone.
